Chargers Sweep DuPage in Pair of 1-Run Contests

Thanks to a dominant effort from Game 1 starter Mitch Smith (Moline, Ill./Sherrard) and tiebreaking runs in the sixth inning of each contest, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team swept a doubleheader with DuPage on Sunday in the Chargers’ home opener at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex, extending their winning streak to five games.

Key Moment
Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers staged a two-out rally to plate the go-ahead run. Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) reached on an error, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a base hit to right from Cacey O’Brien (Moline, Ill./Moline).

Sandburg Star of the Game
Smith fanned 15 DuPage hitters while not issuing a walk. He gave up just one run on four hits in the complete-game victory, throwing 82 of his 114 pitches for strikes. In 19 innings this season, Smith has a 1.11 ERA, 25 strikeouts and three walks.

Key Moment
Tied at 5 in the sixth, Antonio Dominguez (Rock Island, Ill./United Township) led off the inning with a double to center and scored the go-ahead run one batter later when Kevin Ulrich (Benson, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) reached on an error on a grounder to short.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Center fielder Payton Hartbank (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon) reached base three times and scored three runs, highlighted by a solo homer to center in the first to open the scoring.
